Have you seen us posting about this show called "Second Chance Stage" and are wondering what it's all about? We thought we'd share more about i!

Earlier this year, we received an unexpected, but exciting call from our friend, Rachelle Mendez, one of the Executive Producers who worked on Queer Eye when it was filmed right here in Kansas City.  She needed help for a new talent competition show, Second Chance Stage, filming for the Magnolia Network and streaming on Max. The show would feature celebrity judges Heidi Gardner, Martina McBride, and Taye Diggs with host Emmanuel Acho. Joey and Buck are competition show enthusiasts, making it a regular habit to watch performances from all over the world while they're eating dinner.

"As music and performing arts lovers, competition shows are just something we both love to watch, and it helps us to unwind and transition from a long day at work". - Joey

The concept? Thirty (well, 31 in the end) contestants, all everyday people who had set their dreams of stage stardom aside due to unexpected life obstacles, were about to get their second chance. They needed stylists who could consult with them to make sure their wardrobe would amplify their personalities for their performances. Rachelle remembered ULAH from when two segments of Queer Eye were filmed in our store back in 2018, and Buck even lent his design expertise to a home interiors segment for a third episode. This time, she needed us to help these contestants shine on TV.

We’d never worked on a production of this scale, but we couldn’t say no to the opportunity! In just two weeks before filming, we set up Zoom meetings with the contestants to get a feel for their personalities, and their talents. Our first challenge was to help transform their everyday looks into stage-ready outfits for their first performances. Those who made it past the first performance would get our style support more extensively for the finale episodes. We worked two long, packed days, getting to know these amazing artists, their stories, and their dreams. Hearing their personal journeys, and finding ways to elevate their looks to reflect their unique talents was the most meaningful part of the experience!

"Working behind the scenes on Second Chance Stage reminded me of some of my strengths, like having to improvise on the spot. I loved the energy of being a part of the team who was working hard and fast to bring the show to life". - Buck

When filming began, things got real — and fast. They split us up immediately! Joey was stationed at Hotel Kansas City to handle fittings, while Buck held down the fort at The Music Hall for dress rehearsals. We were nervous about being apart (we make such a great team!), but thanks to FaceTime, we managed to stay connected and collaborate even from separate locations. By evening, we were back together for the show tapings to be there for final looks before contestants were filmed.

"The days were long. For over two weeks, we worked every day from 9 AM to between 10-11 PM. The cast, crew, and contestants all helped make the hard work worthwhile!" - Joey

The behind-the-scenes controlled chaos of producing a TV show was something we’ll never forget. From wardrobe malfunctions (hello, split pants!) to quick tailor fixes, outfit swaps due to mic-pack issues, and even camera problems with unexpected moire patterns — we had to be ready for anything! While the pressure was on and the stakes felt high, seeing these contestants step onto the stage feeling confident and true to themselves made it all worth it.

The production itself was a massive effort. The hard work of everyone involved blew us away — from the talent wranglers to the camera and sound crew, the producers, and everyone else who made up the team. Hotel Kansas City made an incredible backdrop for contestant interviews and rehearsals, and we got to explore the iconic Music Hall backstage, which was so cool. It truly takes a village to pull off a show like Second Chance Stage.

For us, the most rewarding part was connecting with these contestants and helping them realize their dreams. Being surrounded by so much talent, passion, and perseverance was inspiring. The best compliment came from the network, who said, "You guys elevated this show!"

The finale — split into two episodes, was filmed at the Midland Theater and airs Thursday, December 19th, 2024, on MAX (formerly HBO). Because of an interview with Startland News, we had the privilege of early screening, and we are so excited (and grateful) to share that you'll be seeing moments of us working with contestants throughout the two finale episodes!. Be sure to tune in, cheer for the contestants, and show some love for local film production in Kansas City. It is hard work!

Working on the show perfectly aligned with the launch of our in-store personal styling sessions! If you'd like to make an appointment with us, click here.

A big thank you to Rachelle Mendez, who is now the Head of Unscripted TV at Eva Longoria's Hyphenate Media Group, for the opportunity!

Enjoy the finale — and remember, sometimes, all we need is a second chance. ✨
